On Monday July 29th, me and 3 other team mates went to Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital to conduct some interviews for TStv. It was a very educational trip where we got to interview numerous staff at the hospital who had very different roles in the hospital.
I had the privilege to interview Dr. Melanie Penner who is a paediatrician and a clinician investigator at the hospital whose focus is research in autism service delivery. Dr. Penner oversees children with autism and ensures that they receive all the support that they require.
I had a great time asking Dr. Penner some questions I had about autism, because as a member of “Best Buddies” program at my school, I have had a lot of interactions with students with autism.
I was surprised by the fact that children with autism wanted to socialize just as much as children without autism but are not always able to do so in an efficient manner.
Dr. Penner was very kind and patient and she told me that she really enjoyed her job describing the children she works with as “…very rewarding to see them laugh and smile.”
Dr. Melanie Penner taught me – in fact taught us all a very important lesson that helping others is the greatest way to bring joy into everybody’s life!
Thank you Dr. Penner!
